Time for some great docs you may have missed during the festival – Garbage Dreams and Voices from Inside: Israelis Speak. Landlocked is working with the Center for Human Rights at the University of Iowa to bring a series of movies to the downtown campus.  In addition to the Landlocked docs, Milk will head the series, and Pray the Devil Back to Hell – a doc about Liberian women working for peace – will be the last film shown.  This series also kicks off the Center’s tenth anniversary celebration.

All screenings are free and open to the public.  The audience is invited to stay after each film for a panel discussion about the human-rights topics in the films.

Landlocked shorts will play before the movie starts this weekend, April 3 and 4 (Fri and Sat). The featured movie is YES. Price is $2 and you can come anytime from 11:00 pm on. Like they say… midnight movies.

Thanks to Molly Golemo and Aaron Corso of the UI Campus Activities Board, more Landlocked shorts – including Jean Shorts – will be screened in front of the Midnight Movies series this spring 2009.  We’re talking the Bijou Theater on April 3 and 4 (main feature: Yes Man) and April 10 and 11 (main feature: The Reader).

In partnership with the Campus Activities Board at The University of Iowa, we’ll show 2-3 shorts on March 12.  Specifically, JEAN SHORTS by Roshan Murthy & Sam Copeland, a hilarious hit at Landlocked 2008.

Our final Senior Center encore screening will be held at 2:00 pm this Sunday, February 22, 2009.  The documentary is 52 minutes long.  It’s the fascinating story of a coal fire that has been burning underground in the coal-mining regions of Appalachia for over 150 years.  That’s right – YEARS.

Remember that parking is free on Sundays in the Tower Place parking ramp right next to the Senior Center.  And the screening is also free.

We had a full room, two great documentaries, AND the audience got to ask questions of the filmmakers.  There was great interest in the documentary topics.  Kelly and Tammy Rundle brought along several Ioway artifacts which had been given to them by Ioway people, including a really beautiful rattle.  Sasha Waters Freyer revealed that This American Gothic will air on IPTV in March 2009.

At a special encore screening from Landlocked 2008, the filmmakers of two Iowa-centric documentaries will be on hand for Q&A with the audience following each film.

Lost Nation: The Ioway will start at 2:00 pm.  This hour-long documentary – a fascinating yet forgotten tale of American conquest and Native American survival that played out in Iowa before it became a state - will be followed by comments from filmmakers Kelly and Tammy Rundle and an opportunity to ask questions about their documentary.

After that we will show another hour-long documentary, This American Gothic, a quirky portrait of Eldon, Iowa, site of the house that inspired Grant Wood’s famous painting American Gothic.  Sasha Waters Freyer, the filmmaker, will talk about her film and answer questions from the audience immediately following the screening.

Who can attend:  Everyone is welcome, all ages – you don’t have to be a senior to take part in activities at the Senior Center
